What is the American Dream of the well-to-do built upon?
The backbreaking labor of the working poor. /The bowed backs of the working poor.
The backbreaking labor of the working poor. /The bowed backs of the working poor. 解析第一段最后一句“The American Dream for the well-to-do grows from the bowed backs of the working poor, who too often have to choose between groceries and rent.”中的grows from和問題中的is built upon是一個意思。因此,本題可以用“The bowed backs of the working poor,”來回答,也可以基于理解,回答成“The backbreaking labor of the working labor”。

Some people say the success of a country lies in the quality of life enjoyed by its people and has nothing to do with money, but others argue that the rich economy is a key factor. Write an essay of about 300 words on the topic given below.
THE MEASURE OF A COUNTRY'S SUCCESS
In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary.
Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
Write your composition on ANSWER SHEET FOUR.
We often talk about the success of a country but when we stop to think about the measure of it we may find it difficult to define a clear criterion. It has long been a firm belief of some people that the criterion lies in the quality of life enjoyed by the people of a country regardless of whether it is rich or not in economic terms. According to them a country can never be called a successful one if its people have a lot to complain about the life they are living even though they have a sufficient amount of money to spend. Thus to follow their line of argumentation the government of a country should try their utmost to satisfy every need of its citizens and make them happy instead of devoting all its efforts to the economic development. However like many others who find it hard to agree fully with this opinion I tend to take the general economic strength of a country as the basis for measurement. In the first place the rich economy of a country is as far as I see it a prerequisite for the high quality life of its people. Only when a nation big or small focuses on its economic development can it provide enough jobs for its citizens who in turn can earn sufficient income to pay for their life necessities such as housing clothing food and education which are all the key parameters of a happiness formula. Secondly when it is rich a country can channel more money into the development of public facilities and amenities which obviously contribute a great deal to the life improvement of its people. In addition the wealth of a country ensures its important status in the international community. Needless to say with a strong economy a nation will have a major role to play in world affairs. For instance the United States and some other Western countries have a greater influence on the world than most of the others both politically and diplomatically simply because they have more economic edges among other things. In conclusion only when the economy of a country is developed and its people are content with their life can this country be regarded as a successful country. A happy life in a poor country is simply impossible and even unimaginable in the world today.

In conclusion, only when the economy of a country is developed and its people are content with their life can this country be regarded as a successful country. A happy life in a poor country is simply impossible and even unimaginable in the world today. 解析第一部分為文章的第一、二段。第一段引出話題,第二段對題目中給出的兩種觀點中的一種進行簡單討論后表明作者支持另外一種觀點,(However, like many others who find it hard to agree fully with this opinion,I tend to take the general economic strength of a country as the basis for measurement.)
